Should students change their answers on multiple choice questions?

Multiple choice exams are ubiquitous, but advice on test-taking strategies varies and is not always well informed by research. This study evaluated the question of whether students benefit or harmed when they change their initial answers multiple questions in context physiology biology courses. Previously marked examinations were reviewed for eraser marks that indicated answer changes, impact these changes exam grades was tabulated. In addition, faculty surveyed opinions about changing answers. A plurality (36%) reported a belief usually harm student grades, whereas slim majority (51%) believed helped scores (χ 2 = 60.52, P < 0.0001). Empirically, across two exams, changed from an incorrect to correct one 2.8 times (SD 2.2) compared with 1.0 time 1.4) negative direction. Therefore, average, benefited ( V 123.5, 0.0001) changing. Furthermore, comparing same course, some consistently more likely than others (adjusted R 0.23, 0.0001), first provided no prediction how much would second −0.004, 0.42). These data support argument should be advised review revise responses before submitting them.
